Tinnitus is noise generated by your ear or central auditory nervous system (neuronal pathways in the brain). It takes on many forms including high-pitched ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring, whooshing, clicking, fluttering, etc. If you have more than occasional ringing, or any kind of ear noise that you find troublesome, ask your physician for a prescription for an audiologic evaluation and schedule a Complete Diagnostic Audiologic Evaluation with our office.
Get started on the path to become well compensated to your tinnitus. In rare cases, tinnitus goes away with treatment, typically in conjunction with treatment by an Ear-Nose-Throat physician. For most people, their brain needs time and training to reduce awareness to this sensation. Many individuals are able to do this on their own, but some continue to find their tinnitus intrusive and will benefit from professional guidance.
To learn about the nature of your tinnitus and to learn coping strategies, a counseling session is incorporated into a Complete Diagnostic Audiologic Evaluation. If self-coping strategies are not enough, hearing aids (for people who also have hearing loss) or other sound generating devices (similar to hearing aids without providing added amplification to compensate for hearing loss) are available. Most hearing aids dispensed by Synapse Audiology have combination sound generators to provide relaxing, rejuvenating sound to alleviate tinnitus when it becomes intrusive during the day. Additional counseling sessions are provided with the fitting of devices for tinnitus management.
